Tom’s dark DW dark code colorization for Dreamweaver
Are you coding in Dreamweaver and don’t like the default light code colorization? I created dark background color theme for Dreamweaver. I took inspiration from Green Chaud theme for Aptana IDE.

List of supported formats:
UPDATE 0.9.1 – added ColdFusion, ColdFusion component
- CSS
- HTML
- PHP
- JavaScript
- XML
- Java
- JSP
- ActionScript
- WML
- ColdFusion
- ColdFusion component
All you need to do is to download Tom’s dark DW theme XML file and follow instructions below.
Windows XP users
Dreamweaver CS4
- Close Dreamweaver
- Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS4\configuration\CodeColoring\
- Find and backup file Colors.xml
- Copy file colors.xml downloaded from this site
- Change default background color to #4D4D4D (edit –> preferences –> code coloring)
Dreamweaver CS3
- Close Dreamweaver
- Go to C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Adobe\Dreamweaver 9\Configuration\CodeColoring\
- Find and backup file Colors.xml
- Copy file colors.xml downloaded from this site
- Change default background color to #4D4D4D (edit –> preferences –> code coloring)
Windows 7 users
Dreamweaver CS4
- Close Dreamweaver
- Go to C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS4\en_US\Configuration\CodeColoring
- Find and backup file Colors.xml
- Copy file colors.xml downloaded from this site
- Change default background color to #4D4D4D (edit –> preferences –> code coloring)
MacOS users
Dreamweaver CS4
- Close Dreamweaver
- Go to /Users/%name%/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Dreamweaver CS4/%localization(en_US)%/Configuration/CodeColoring
- Find and backup file Colors.xml
- Copy file colors.xml downloaded from this site
- Change default background color to #4D4D4D (edit –> preferences –> code coloring)

Awesome addition to Dreamweaver, many people hate the default colors and would prefer to work on a dark background, finally there is a solution!
COOL!
can you also include classic asp?
Yes I will include all formats supported by DW.
For CS4 OSX Users, Overwrite Colors.xml in folder:
/Users/*name*/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Dreamweaver CS4/*localization(en_US)*/Configuration/CodeColoring
You don’t have to overwrite the one in the Applications folder.
didnt work in german version cs4.
I put this file to
a)C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Administrator\Application Data\Adobe\Dreamweaver 9\Configuration\CodeColoring
and
b)C:\Programme\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS4\configuration\CodeColoring
can anyone confirm that isnt work, too?
yeah found:
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Administrator\Anwendungsdaten\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS4\de_DE\Configuration\CodeColoring
copy paste
@kelvin
thank you for sharing it with us!
Tom,
FYI–in Windows 7, you must change it at this location:
C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS4\en_US\Configuration\CodeColoring.
Also, need color values for Coldfusion! (cfm, cfc)
Thanks!
Is the downloaded version correct? The colors didn’t change. I did a compare between the old (I archived the old) and all of the colors are the same, though your version has other entries.
@ Steve
Coldfusion added. Thank you for posting the Win7 path here!
@Brian
What OS and version of DW do you use?
BIG BIG THANK YOU!! especially from my eyes

Works great on polish version
keep up with your great work
greets from Poland
Tom–
Coldfusion support still not working on the download you have out there. The .xml file looks the same and has same modified date of 7/3/2009. Are you sure you uploaded it?
The thought of going on really appeals to me.
@Steve
It should be ok now. My apologies.
Tom,
I must be missing something, but the file that I’m downloading doesn’t change cfm or cfc pages at all. Would you mind emailing it to me? I assume my email address is shown on your end.
I downloaded the colors.zip file on 3 different browsers so I know there’s no file caching going on. In the xml file, the last colorgroup defined is “XML”, and the file still has a last modified date of 7/3.
You sir, are a f**king scientist. You truly win the noble prize, you make Saint Michael cry. My eye’s can now rest at ease.
Works fine on XP and OS-X running CS4!!!
Hi Tom,
I’d like to thank you for your work! However, I’m having some problems using the color scheme on my computer (Vista 32-bit).
I followed the directions for Windows 7, and it worked fine, but the colors I get do not match your screenshots. Please take a look at the following image:
http://brianegan.com/dw/screenshot.png
When I look at the XML file, I see:
So it looks as though the XML file is telling the various components to behave this way, but I much prefer the look of your screenshots as compared to what I’m getting.
Please advise when you have time!
Thanks again,
Brian
this doesnt seem to work for me, im using windows vista CS4.
i copied the Colors.xml file and backup the other one.
@Brian Egan & David
Myself I tried it only on Dreamweaver CS4 on Windows XP. I hope some Vista user will let us know soon how to make it work correctly on Windows Vista.
Hi Tom,
Thanks for your time! Are you sure the file you have uploaded is the correct file? I downloaded it to try it on OS X last night and the same colors came up as my Windows Vista installation. Looking at the XML file, it seems like my machines are interpreting the files correctly. You have darker backgrounds, such as “bgcolor=’#242424′” or “bgcolor=’#000000′” laced throughought your XML file, which is causing some areas, such as comments, to be darker than the default background.
Thanks again for your help!
Brian
This is what I’ve been looking for! THanks~
Same as Brian Egan, I found other version of this somewhere with that bg color #242424 in manual and looked ok. Please check this vs CS3 coz some stuff isnt right. BYE
Wonderful !!! Nice color scheme.
You saved my eyes !!!!!!
Awesome – now I can use dreamweaver again.
vista x64 german:
C:\Users\*Admin*\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS4\de_DE\Configuration\CodeColoring
Works great on Mac, thanks! Although I prefer a darkness background (#333 or #444)

Awesome! Thanks a lot for sharing!
Did anyone ever get the .cfm and .cfc color update?
Tnx, but I my coldfusion color coding didn’t update at all … can you please fix this?
What’s the status on an ASP update for this? It’s really awesome too! Thanks for sharing!
Hey Tom,
Really nice colours in this DW scheme – much appreciated.
Only criticism – Download button is very hard to find…
cheers
Sweet! you should release more!!

http://upanh.com/uploads/19-Sep-2009/2t2kmfozlamtc0r995rv.jpg
Wrong color code ASP
how to fix??
Hello – I can not get the coldfusion code coloring to work either. I opened up the Colors XML file from the download and it had no coldfusion section. Any suggestions?
Thanks
~ Ben
Why can’t I make it work on Dreamweaver CS3…aw.
thanks man, that is a real life saver for me
Weeeee thanks!
File doesn’t include ColdFusion section. Can you fix download link please. My eyes are almost bleeding.
Thanks
I’m maybe already blind, but i hardly find the donwload link on this page. Here it is :
http://www.sramekdesign.com/wp-content/plugins/download-monitor/download.php?id=1
Thanks!
Very helpful. But as someone else said download button was hard to find (i’m not stupid it just took me a few seconds longer to find it =))
There’s a problem running on MAC OS X (CS3). The colors don’t change… ahhhhh I miss my PC…
HOLY SHIT -took me about ten minutes to find the download button. are you deliberately hiding it there???
anyway
thanks, sounds like a good idea. havent installed yet and im on os x so im hoping for the best. thanks for the hard work
doesn’t work very good on DWCS4 on Vista Bizz. It still shows white background. And as Harry says, make more effort in displaying the download link, it’s nearly unfindable.
Amazing! Never thought someone would release alt colour schemes.
Thanks you saved my mangled dw.
Thank You Sooo Much for this.
The White was hurting my eyes on the Default Colours
Thank You
Has anyone gotten this working for Windows 7 Dreamweaver CS3 64 bit (i don’t think the 32 v 64 makes a difference).
On my Win 7 install I don’t have an AppData folder in my users folder.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS3\configuration\CodeColoring
I tried placing it in the above location but it doesn’t work either. If I remove Colors.xml from the above location Dreamweave won’t start.
Where is the download button???
where is the download button? would like to use this as DWs colours are fairly awful
@Harry
There was something wrong with download monitor plugin. Now you can try to download the file again.
I apologize
